The Process
Sand carving is one way to precisely etch stone with intricate detail, and is achieved by propelling abrasive
onto a surface (in this case, stone) using compressed air. Wherever the abrasive contacts the surface, the
roughness erodes the stone. Chris' work is unique in that each design is hand drawn and manually cut into a
single use rubber overlay. The design is sandblasted to a soft finish, creating an "etched" look in the stone.
Hand drawing each design ensures an exceptional, one-of-a-kind product. Chris prefers this method because it
allows him the opportunity to not only draw freehand, but to also carve stone while paying close attention
to detail and depth. He delights in hand-selecting each stone, as he feels the stone is a work of art in and
of itself. Through this, his interest grew into a passion, and subsequently a way of living. Realizing his
goal, Chris now designs and produces full time in his studio.
